CHAPTER 16

Elsbeth applied a generous layer of red lipstick and leaned toward the mirror to smear away imperfections. She couldn't recall the last time she wore the shade named Dangerous Woman and thought how ironic it was to wear it tonight. She expected nothing less of dinner except gathering information and looking for evidence.

She blotted her lips with a tissue. Ambrose had the weapon. She was certain of it. What worried her was him knowing she was out of the country. Ambrose didn't pose as an opportunist. Yes, she lived on an island, but it was still easily accessible if you had the right connections.

Ambrose had arranged a private charter to pick her up at seven p.m., and as she stood on the pier, shivering in her knee-length dress, she tried to convince herself this wasn’t a date; it was a mission.

A spotlight appeared on the horizon, bouncing along the waves as it approached the shore. A sleek white charter docked at the pier. Elsbeth found a seat inside, and stared into the consuming darkness outside, her gut rolling with anxiety. It was too late to turn back now.

A black Audi was waiting for her at the harbor when the charter docked. She slipped inside the car without question, feeling like she was walking into a trap. Ambrose was trying very hard to impress her, leaving a bitter taste in her mouth.

She was driven to a dimly lit street, lined by tall trees. A large house loomed behind a wrought iron fence, illuminated by soft orbs of light hidden among the palm trees. The sheer grandeur of the property was astonishing. Elsbeth exited the car and approached the gate. She gazed into the black depths of a security camera and smiled shyly. “Elsbeth Chevaleer for Ambrose.”

“Elsbeth, I'm happy you made it.” Ambrose's voice sounded from the device. “I didn't think you would come.”

The gates swung open and Elsbeth wandered down the path, her pumps clicking on the pale stone. The delicate scent of salt air lingered on the evening breeze. Ambrose appeared on the porch dressed in a suit and kissed her cheek when she neared. The stench of alcohol wavered on his breath. “I hope the trip went well.”

“I appreciate the five-star service. It's very generous of you.”

“It's my pleasure.” Ambrose escorted her inside the complex. A sparkling chandelier hung in the foyer, projecting fractured light across large antique paintings. Nestled between the double staircase was a wooden table displaying a huge bouquet of lilies.

“I had no idea you were ...” Elsbeth's voice trailed off, gobsmacked by the manor's classic beauty.

“Rich?” Ambrose chuckled. He pressed a button on the intercom and a butler appeared carrying a tray with two flute glasses. “I'm an overachiever who desires to excel in every aspect of my life, including where I live. I consider my home a palace, and I display it as such.” He handed Elsbeth a drink. “Wealth is an added bonus.”

He escorted her to the kitchen with black granite countertops and gold accents.
